Finning Canada is the winner of the 2023 Buddy Up trophy! They’re taking the trophy home for their outstanding involvement in the campaign and for promoting authentic conversations among employees in the workplace.
“The statistics really shocked me about men and suicide. It got me thinking about my guys and our team and the people up in the oil sands and shift work… a lot of people struggle with families, divorce… it hits home,” says Mark Wilson, mining and technologies supervisor with Finning Canada. Wilson initiated the Buddy Up campaign for his team in Fort McMurray.
More than 160,000 Campaign materials distributed to date
Throughout June 2023, we shared interviews and insights from Buddy Up Champions Mike Principalli (Volker Stevin), Debra Murphy (Alberta Beef Producers), Amber Houle (Northern Sunrise County), Michael Mee (Schlumberger), Tyler Pritchard (Sun Life), and Mark Wilson (Finning Canada).
Centre for Suicide Prevention has partnered with CSV Midstream Solutions Corp. to implement a new suicide prevention program for on-site workers involved in the construction of CSV’s Albright Gas Processing Plant. Buddy Up Skills Training equips workers to skillfully respond to co-workers who are struggling with their mental health or may be considering suicide.
Through Buddy Up, all on-site workers will receive basic suicide prevention training and are invited and encouraged to pursue more comprehensive training in the form of half day and 2-day workshops. CSV hopes the program will contribute to reducing stigma associated with mental health, both in Alberta’s Oil and Gas industry and its broader community.
